The competition

Australia’s longest-running maths competition

First run in 1978, the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is the largest and most well-known maths competition for school students in Australia, and one of the largest of its kind in the world. It is run by the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), a national not-for-profit dedicated to developing mathematical talent.

Every year, a fresh set of problems is designed by leading educators and academics. The questions start gently and climb steadily in difficulty, so that beginners and the most able students alike find something to reach for. There is no penalty for a wrong answer — the AMC rewards thinking, not caution.

Today the competition is sat by millions of students across more than 30 countries and regions, giving families a meaningful point of comparison far beyond a single classroom.

Why it matters

A competition that has helped generations of students discover they’re good at maths.

Because the problems are original each year and pitched across the whole ability range, the AMC is as much about encouragement as it is about ranking — every entrant leaves with a certificate and a sense of what they can do. See how it works →
